Stand Up – Speak Up, when it’s needed?

“If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.”
Romans 12:18 (NIV)

‘Why don’t you stand up for yourself?” This was a from a co-worker after I let another co-worker stand in line in front of me. You see, at work we line up to clock-out every afternoon. It is a habit of mine to stand in line, ahead of everybody instead of sitting down while waiting for the time, not because I want to be ahead of everyone else. If I could have my way, I can be the one behind the machine and be the first one out, but that is not my point. Occasionally, there would be someone who would ask me if they can be ahead of me and I would kindly obliged. At other times, I would tell a co-worker or two that I know are heading to their second job to get ahead of me. At that one instance, obviously that one co-worker of mine thought that being nice and kind and considerate is not standing up for yourself.

“My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” James 1:19 (NIV)

Do you listen to argue or do you listen to understand? [tweet this] I don’t like arguing, so much – that if you don’t know me, you would think that I am weak, that I can’t stand up for myself. You see, our words can heal and break – in split seconds…and we can’t take it back. Can you imagine the difference it would make if we listen to understand?

Do you answer with calmness or with ridicule? How can you be so calm? Has anybody asked you that? In a moment where an outburst is expected and you calmly or perhaps silently deal with the situation. Or are you the type who would waste no time in proving you are better, stronger and wiser? Ah, the battle of I am better than you are….

“…Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.” Romans 12:3

Would it be too much for us to look, treat and respect each other as equal? [tweet this] Not poorer or richer. Better or wiser. Nice looking or average looking. Higher or lesser value…

but equal.

All children of God.

do not consider yourself to be superior to those other branches. If you do, consider this: You do not support the root, but the root supports you.” Romans 11:18 (NIV)

All good things,
